Under-eye darkness changes as you get older, and most women don't realize it has changed. In your twenties and thirties, it's usually shadow and pigment, which is why concealer worked. After 40, the skin in that area thins and loses the collagen that kept it opaque, and what you start seeing is the blue and purple of the vessels underneath. Coverage can't fix that, because you're not covering a mark, you're looking through skin at something behind it.

A brightener works on color instead. Pink sits opposite blue on the color wheel, so a pink-toned corrector neutralizes the tone rather than burying it, and the skin above it goes back to reading as skin. The practical difference matters as much as the optical one. A good brightener takes seconds, needs no brush and no steady hand, and either replaces concealer entirely or goes underneath it so that far less concealer is needed. For a lot of women, that turns a fifteen-minute negotiation with the bathroom mirror into something they do without thinking about it.
